LINK AND IT'S TYPE

What is a link?
Each part of a machine which moves relative to some other part, is known as a link or a kinematic link or element.

A link or element need not to be a rigid body, but it must be a resistant body. A body is said to be a resistant body if it is capable of transmitting the required force with negligible deformation.
Thus a link should have relative motion, and it must be a resistant body.

Types of link:-
A link or element is classified below

1] Rigid link, 2] Flexible link, 3] Fluid link

1] Rigid link- A rigid link is one which does not undergo any deformation while transmitting the motion.

{ However, as the deformation of a connection rod crank etc. of a reciprocating steam engine is not appreciable, they can be considered as rigid links}

2] Flexible link- A flexible link is one partly deformed in a manner not to affect the transmission of motion. for example; belts, chain, ropes and wires are flexible links and transmit tensile force only.

3] Fluid link- The fluid link is one which is formed by having a receptacle and the motion is transmitted through the fluid by pressure or compression only, as in the case of hydraulic press, brakes and jacks.

Other classification of links is described below-
Links can be classified into binary, ternary and quaternary depending upon their ends on which revolute or turning pairs can be placed.
